Former White House Presidential Innovation Fellow, John Teeter, earns second highest honor awarded by the U.S. Department of Commerce

Palo Alto, Calif. – March 2, 2016 – People Power, an award-winning software company that is enabling leading service providers and manufacturer’s with cloud and mobile services for the Internet of Things (IoT), is proud to announce its Chief Scientist, John Teeter, was awarded the Silver Medal Award for Exceptional Service from the U.S. Department of Commerce for his work in developing Green Button. Green Button is an initiative that makes it possible for electricity customers to download their own household electricity usage from their utility website.

To date more than 60 million homes and businesses can access their own energy information thanks to the Green Button initiative. As part of the Green Button for America team, Mr. Teeter is recognized for his “exceptional performance characterized by noteworthy or superlative contributions that have a direct and lasting impact within the Department.” Mr. Teeter, while serving as a Whitehouse Presidential Innovation Fellow, worked with the National Institute of Standards and Technology Smart Grid and Cyber-Physical Systems (IoT) team, in the creation of the Green Button standard.

“We are extremely proud of the work John is doing with Green Button that not only helps people reduce their energy costs, but also helps to create an economy of clean energy consumers,” said Gene Wang, CEO of People Power. “When businesses, like People Power, can take energy data and present it to consumers in a secure, easy-to-understand way from a smartphone or tablet, we can help make a tangible difference in the world by keeping users informed and encouraged to change their energy behaviors long term.”

Mr. Teeter is also People Power’s Chief Scientist and an active part of its Technical Advisory Board. In May 2014, Mr. Teeter helped People Power pioneer standards for the Green Button initiative. In partnership with London Hydro, a distribution company in Ontario, Canada, People Power delivered one of the industry’s first Green Button-certified, open-source solutions. Today, People Power’s IoT software suite, Ensemble, helps service providers connect its customers with Green Button data from smart meters, sensor networks, and other information sources from smart homes and smart buildings.

People Power’s Ensemble enables powerful community engagement programs that induce behavior changes in energy use across large groups of individuals. People Power has demonstrated this technology with its home energy management programs in Oahu and Cape Cod, where engaged households are currently saving between 7 percent and 15 percent on their monthly electric bills.
